50 Cents Can Change the World
Ghanaian Harriet Bruce Annan may clean toilets in Dusseldorf, but in her home city of Accra she’s a hero. Bruce takes the tips she makes from workers and patrons at the local pub where she works, about 400 euro a month, and uses it to raise 26 children on the other side of the world, rescued from the slums of Ghana. Thanks to her help these children – normally ostracized in Ghanaian society - are housed, clothed, and enrolled in good schools. Life isn’t easy for Harriet Annan in Germany, but giving young people a chance to get ahead in life is worth much more to her than money. This special episode of Deutsche Welle’s In Focus follows Annan on one of her annual trips back to Ghana, and is an inspirational example of how ordinary people have the power to radically change the lives of others.

Update

Harriet Bruce Annan is currently in Accra, where she has purchased two new houses and taken eight more children from the Bukom slum into the program. The German ambassador to Ghana and his wife attended the opening of the new home, and a follow-up documentary is in the works.
