BFC volunteers are in the field defending the last continuously wild buffalo herd and their habitat, and documenting every move made against them.
Each winter and spring, the country's most culturally, spiritually, and genetically important herd of wild bison migrates out of Yellowstone National Park and into a conflict zone. These bison, the last remnants of the wild herds that once numbered over 30,000,000 in this country, face harassment, capture, and ruthless slaughter when they attempt to access public lands to forage and birth their young. Extremely heavy-handed management is the result of a federally funded interagency program to protect Montana's livestock industry from the threat of brucellosis transmission.
